More than 70 students and staff from Quest for Success, a non-profit college preparatory organization, volunteered at Collier Harvest earlier this month to pitch in with postal workers and corporate sponsors from around the region deliver non-perishable food items to local relief agencies.
This year marked the 25th anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive and the 11th year Quest scholars have participated in this annual event. Since 1992, more than 17 millions pounds of food has been collected to aid hunger relief according to Collier Harvest website.
Despite of temperatures in the 90’s, Quest students worked side by side with other volunteers from the community to gather, unpack, sort and repack more than 250,000 lbs of food, collected at mailboxes throughout Collier County, for distribution to more than 60 charitable organizations across Collier and southern Lee counties including Grace’s Place, St. Matthew’s House and the Shelter for Abused Women and Children.
“This is such a great cause because it allows our Quest students to see how their hard work can directly assist in feeding the hungry in Collier County,” explains Sue Zumstein, Executive Director at Quest for Success. “Collier Harvest’s annual event is posted on our Quest calendar at the beginning of each school year — already approved for high school student volunteer hours,” Ms. Zumstein adds. “I am so proud of our Quest students, many of who have been dedicated to this event for the past four years and contributed more than 20,000 hours of high school student volunteer hours in service to those in our community.”
