When Your Story Actually Lands

A great story told to the wrong audience is just noise. In sophisticated, fiercely competitive markets, this distinction is everything. Relevance is the whole game, not just a creative luxury. The brands that win are the ones willing to stop speaking to everyone so they can say exactly the right thing to someone.

After nearly 30 years of building brands, I’ve learned a thing or two. Chief among them: a great story told to the wrong audience is just noise.

Relevance is the difference between a brand narrative that moves people and one that simply exists. It’s the reason two companies in the same industry, with similar budgets and talented teams, can produce wildly different results. One connects. One doesn’t. And nine times out of ten, the gap is relevance, not creativity.

We see it play out right here in our own backyard. Southwest Florida is a unique market  — seasonally driven (much less so these days!), relationship-built, deeply community-rooted and attracting a sophisticated, well-traveled buyer who has global options and chooses here intentionally. This context changes everything about how a brand should tell its story.

Take luxury real estate. A developer building a waterfront residential community needs more than beautiful photography and elegant copy. It needs a narrative that speaks to the specific person visiting the sales gallery. Someone who may have a home in Chicago, a yacht in Monte Carlo, residences on other continents and a shortlist of three markets they’re considering. This buyer is looking for a life, not just a condo. The story has to reflect this back to them before they ever ask a question.

We worked with a client whose brand had all the right ingredients — exquisite product, genuine differentiators, a compelling location — but the messaging was speaking to everyone, which meant it was really speaking to no one. We went back to the foundation. Who is this person? What do they already believe? What does this purchase mean to them beyond the transaction? Once we answered those questions honestly, the story practically wrote itself. Engagement climbed. Qualified leads followed.

The same principle holds in hospitality, healthcare, professional services and  any category where trust is earned before a decision is made. Audiences are sharper than ever. They read past surface-level messaging in seconds. What they respond to is the feeling that a brand actually understands their priorities, their values, the life they’re living or the one they’re working toward.

This is methodology, not magic. It starts with listening more than talking, with asking harder questions about the customer before writing a single word of copy. It resists the temptation to say everything and instead says the one thing that matters most to the people you most need to reach.

Far more than a creative luxury, relevant storytelling is — in this market, at this moment — the whole game. Successful brands are the ones with the clarity and courage to tell a story that isn’t for everyone, because it’s exactly right for someone.
