The Human Side of Relevance

The Human Side of Relevance

Data tells us a lot. Open rates, response times, conversions, closed deals, impressions, market share — these numbers all matter, and we should absolutely pay attention to them.

But numbers can’t tell us why someone paused before responding. Why a client suddenly wants to move faster than the timeline they set two weeks ago. For this, we have to pay attention to something harder to measure — the person behind the decision.

This is where relevance stops being a marketing strategy and starts being a mindset.

In advertising, marketing and public relations, it’s easy to fixate on the deliverables — campaigns, pitches, ads, content calendars, reports. But the best work starts long before any of this. It starts with understanding what actually matters to audiences right now. A few examples make the point:

A customer relocating for a new job is uprooting a life. A business owner launching something new is taking a risk. A client navigating change is looking for confidence, clarity and trust.

Forget this, and messaging can be technically flawless and still miss the mark. Remember it, and suddenly every headline, pitch, post and recommendation lands harder.

This doesn’t happen on autopilot. It takes discipline and practice.

Ask better questions. Listen for what’s said and what isn’t. Notice the hesitation, the urgency, the thing repeated twice. Pay attention to what your audience is actually responding to, not just what the analytics dashboard claims they clicked. And when something matters to a client, remember it. A timely note or a message speaking to their real concern will outweigh another polished campaign every time.

Motivations shift, too. What mattered six months ago isn’t necessarily what matters today. Markets move. Pressures change. Priorities reshuffle. Relevance means staying in the habit of asking, never assuming we already have the answer.

None of this is soft, and it’s certainly not secondary. In a crowded market, the brands that feel most relevant are almost always the ones that feel most human.

So this month, our attention is on more than the metrics. It’s on the meaning behind them. This is where stronger strategy begins. And it’s where the relationships that actually last are built.
